Erika Toda

Erika Toda is, to me, one of the most quietly formidable actresses Japan has produced. From a child performer and model in Kobe's Nada ward to a leading actress who took the Elan d'or Newcomer award in 2009, her trajectory shows real craft rather than mere luck. What impresses me is her range: she can be coolly menacing or genuinely heartbreaking, shifting register so completely that the same face reads as a different person. At 164 centimeters she has a striking screen presence, but it is the spine in her performances that stays with me. I find myself trusting whatever role she chooses next.
