Evan Gershkovich

Evan Gershkovich represents something I deeply admire: a reporter who went toward danger instead of away from it. A philosophy and English graduate of Bowdoin, he moved to Russia to cover one of the hardest beats in journalism, and the 2023 Lovejoy Award only confirms what his work already showed. To me his story is a reminder that a free press is never free in the easy sense, it is paid for by individuals willing to stand exposed. I find his courage genuinely moving, and I think his name belongs in any honest conversation about what journalism actually costs.
