Evelyn "Champagne" King

Evelyn "Champagne" King earns my lasting respect because she caught lightning in a bottle and then refused to let it fade. "Shame" in 1977 landed right at disco's peak, yet she was no one-hit wonder, following it with "I'm in Love" and "Love Come Down" deep into the eighties. Coming up out of the Bronx, she carried a grit that I think you can hear in the warmth and confidence of her voice. To me she represents the staying power that separates a true vocalist from a passing trend. Her records still fill a dance floor, and that longevity is no accident.
