My Take
Fabien Barthez is one of my favorite goalkeepers precisely because he was never tidy. The shaved head, the sweeper-keeper boldness, the 1998 World Cup heroics that earned him the Legion of Honour, all of it felt like a man playing on instinct and nerve. Being named the world's best goalkeeper in 2000 confirmed what fans already sensed. What seals my affection is the second act as a racing driver. Trading the penalty area for the racetrack suits him; both demand split-second courage. Barthez lived flat out, on the pitch and off it.
