Fairuz

Few artists carry the weight of a nation the way Fairuz does. Born Nouhad Haddad in Beirut, she became the voice of Arab mornings and, more than that, a living symbol of modern Lebanon through decades of upheaval. The French honors, from the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres to the Legion of Honour, only confirm what listeners already knew. What moves me is not the awards but the idea that one crystalline voice could become a country's source of comfort and hope. Even without fluent Arabic, I feel the ache in her singing. To me she is proof that a singer can be a homeland.
