My Take
Florence Griffith Joyner, Flo-Jo, is the rare athlete who fused raw speed with pure spectacle. The 100m and 200m world records she set in 1988 still stand today, a fact that grows more astonishing with every passing year. With her flowing hair, six-inch nails, and one-legged track suits, she turned sprinting into performance art and dragged glamour into a sport that had little of it. Her death at just 38 in 1998 remains one of athletics' great tragedies. But I admire her for more than the records; she refused to choose between excellence and individuality, and insisted on both. A true original.
