My Take

What fascinates me about Duchâble is the rebellion hidden inside the prodigy. A Conservatoire de Paris first prize at thirteen, a placing at the Queen Elisabeth Competition, a Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, and yet he eventually chose to abandon the gilded concert hall to play in mountains and by lakes. That refusal of pomp in favor of freedom reads, to me, as the act of a true artist rather than a careerist. Born in Paris in 1952, he seems to value the music over the institution around it. I admire anyone who carries a piano out of the temple and back into the world.
