My Take

Fu Wenjun is exactly the kind of artist I find exciting: a genuine boundary-crosser. Photography, oil painting, sculpture, digital and installation work all sit within his practice, and rather than merely borrowing techniques he coined his own idiom, Digital Pictorial Photography. Inventing a named language of your own is, to me, the truest mark of an artist. Trained at the Sichuan Fine Arts Academy and still rooted in Chongqing, he embodies a grounded, place-based creativity that resists the rootlessness of the global art circuit. He is a reminder that the depth of Chinese contemporary art rests on individuals quietly forging singular paths.
