My Take
What I admire most about Gabourey Sidibe is how completely she rewrote the rulebook on her very first try. Going straight from Brooklyn into the lead of Precious, then collecting an Oscar nomination as only the eighth Black actress in that category, is a debut for the ages. She refused to be defined by anyone else's idea of what a leading woman should look like, and then she kept expanding, into voice work and directing. That self-determination resonates with me. She is proof that talent makes its own category when the existing ones are too small.
