My Take

Gary Oldman is my answer whenever someone asks who the best living screen actor is. From Sid Vicious to Smiley to Churchill, he disappears so completely that I sometimes forget the same man is underneath, and his long-overdue 2018 Oscar felt like the Academy finally catching up to common knowledge. What impresses me even more is Nil by Mouth, the brutal, autobiographical film he wrote and directed in 1997; it proves his artistry runs deeper than mimicry. A working-class Londoner who became a knight without ever softening his edges. That trajectory, to me, is the whole point of acting as a craft.
