My Take

George Miller is genuinely one of the most fascinating filmmakers alive, and I say that as someone who still can't fully wrap their head around his career arc. This is a man who trained as a medical doctor in Sydney, then turned around and blew audiences away with Mad Max in 1979 — a raw, violent, low-budget chase film shot in the Australian outback that somehow launched one of cinema's great action franchises. What I love most is that he never got typecast: the same brain that conjured the post-apocalyptic fury of Mad Max: Fury Road — a film many critics called the best action movie ever made — also gave us Happy Feet, a charming animated musical about dancing penguins that won him the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2007. That range is almost absurd. Born in tiny Chinchilla, Queensland in 1945, still active and uncompromising well into his eighties — Miller is proof that genuine vision just doesn't expire.
