My Take

John Farrow fascinates me as a true journeyman of old Hollywood. Born in Marrickville, Australia in 1904, he became a director, writer, producer and even served as a naval officer, spending much of his career in the United States. He won the 1957 Academy Award for adapting Around the World in Eighty Days and earned a Best Director nomination for Wake Island. I'm drawn to his darker work though, taut noirs like The Big Clock and Night Has a Thousand Eyes, plus the western Hondo. A Walk of Fame star and a CBE round out a remarkably varied life cut short in 1963.

John Villiers Farrow, KGCHS (10 February 1904 – 27 January 1963) was an Australian film director, producer, and screenwriter. Spending a considerable amount of his career in the United States, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director in 1942 for Wake Island, and in 1957, he won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Around the World in Eighty Days.
