George Wassouf

To me, George Wassouf is one of those artists who proves greatness needs no translation. Selling over 60 million records across the Arab world and earning the title Sultan El-Tarab isn't an accident, it's four decades of craft. What strikes me most is that voice, weathered and aching, capable of carrying emotion straight through a language barrier. I can't follow the lyrics, yet I feel the longing in them. He was arrested in Sweden for cocaine possession in 2008 and was a prominent supporter of Bashar al-Assad's government throughout the civil war, which listeners should know, yet musically he carries Syrian heritage with real dignity, and I think Western listeners who write off Arab pop are missing out on a genuine master worth discovering.
