Ghassan Massoud

Ghassan Massoud's Saladin in Kingdom of Heaven remains, for me, the heart of that film. In a Western epic he gave the Muslim leader intelligence, restraint and unmistakable dignity, refusing the easy caricature the genre often invites. A Syrian actor from Tartus who also teaches at university, he carries an intellectual gravity that radiates even in silence. I am drawn to performers who can command a frame without raising their voice, and Massoud does exactly that. That he keeps telling Arab stories to the wider world, amid his homeland's turmoil, only deepens my admiration for his quiet authority.
