My Take
Gillian Welch fascinates me precisely because of the gap between her resume and her sound. A New York native trained at Berklee, she could have chased polish, yet she and David Rawlings built a spare, shadowed Appalachian world from little more than two guitars. The New Yorker's phrase, innovative yet obliquely reminiscent of older rural forms, captures why she matters: she doesn't imitate tradition, she converses with it. The Americana Artist of the Year and a lifetime songwriting award only ratify what fans already knew. I admire artists who win by subtraction, and Welch is the patron saint of that quiet discipline.
