My Take

GZA is genuinely one of the most cerebral MCs to ever touch a microphone, and I don't say that lightly. Born in Brooklyn, he was already rapping before Wu-Tang Clan was a thing — he was the first member to land a solo record deal, which tells you everything about where the talent was concentrated. His 1995 album Liquid Swords is, in my view, a near-perfect rap record: dense, cold, chess-match lyricism over RZA's grimy, cinematic production. The man actually studies quantum physics for fun, and you can hear it — his verses reward repeated listens the way a good novel does. He's never been the flashiest Wu member, but he's the one serious heads always bring up when the "greatest lyricist" debate gets going, and honestly, they're not wrong.
