My Take
Hailee Steinfeld fascinates me because she keeps refusing to be just one thing. An Oscar nomination in her early teens for True Grit could have typecast her as a prestige child actor, but she pivoted into sharp comedy with The Edge of Seventeen, blockbusters with Bumblebee, voice work, and a legitimate pop career. Her Dickinson was the clever trick of her generation: a period drama played with thoroughly modern nerves. What I value is her instinct for material; she picks projects that stretch her rather than flatter her. Of the actors who grew up on screen this century, she strikes me as one of the most quietly strategic.
