Hamish Watson

Hamish Watson appeals to me precisely because flanker is the position where the unglamorous work happens. Born in Manchester but committed to Scotland, he built his game on diving into the breakdown and winning ball nobody else wants to contest. At 1.80 m he is not oversized for the role, which makes his relentlessness the real story. His move from Edinburgh, via a loan at Leicester Tigers, to Castres in France reads, to me, as a player still hungry to test himself rather than coast. I always reserve my loudest applause for the unseen custodians of a team, and Watson is exactly the kind of grafter I admire.
