My Take
I'll be honest, Taisei Makihara is exactly the kind of ballplayer I find myself rooting for without quite knowing when it started. A Kurume kid out of Fukuoka, listed at 173cm, which is hardly towering in pro baseball, yet he's carved out a real career by being the guy who can play just about anywhere on the diamond. That utility role doesn't get the highlight reels or the magazine covers, but I love it, the manager looks down the bench in a tight spot and his name comes up first. There's something quietly admirable about a craftsman who just does the job, infield, outfield, wherever, without making noise about it. He came in through the developmental draft and became the first player from that route to win a batting title, which reads steady and unglamorous in the best way. I imagine Kurume is plenty proud.
