My Take
Shindo was born in 1974 on Innoshima in Hiroshima Prefecture, and formed a band called No Score with his high school classmates there. That band eventually became Porno Graffitti. I find that origin genuinely remarkable: a group assembled among teenagers on an island in the Seto Inland Sea went on to become a fixture of Japanese rock for decades. Most high school bands dissolve the summer after graduation. What kept this one viable, I suspect, is that Shindo is not merely the guitarist standing behind the vocalist. He writes lyrics, he composes, he produces, he has published books, and he released solo work under the name Haruichi. Bands with an internal writer survive shifts in taste; bands renting their songs from outside do not, because when the fashion moves the supply dries up. Longevity in pop music is usually mistaken for luck or nostalgia. More often it is somebody in the room who can keep generating the material, and here that job appears to be his.
