Hayedeh

Hayedeh is, for me, proof that a voice can outlast empires and exile alike. Born in Tehran and elder sister to fellow star Mahasti, she became one of the most revered vocalists of the Persian world, her rich, mournful tone carrying an entire culture's longing. What moves me is that she kept singing after leaving her homeland in the wake of revolution, and that her recordings still console listeners decades after her death in 1990. You need not understand the words to feel the ache in them. That, to me, is the rarest kind of artistry.
