My Take
I came to Hikaru Tono the way most people outside Japan probably do: through a role, not a name. For me it was Anna Yanami in Too Many Losing Heroines! - a girl who loses, keeps eating, and keeps talking anyway. That part looks easy and isn't. Play her too broad and she is only comic relief; play her too soft and the comedy dies. Tono holds both in the same breath, which is a large part of why the show lands at all. Then you read the rest of her credits and the range gets strange in a good way. Suzuran in In the Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki, Matikanetannhauser in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, Yujia Wang in Assault Lily, Sura in My Isekai Life, Serena back in Bermuda Triangle: Colorful Pastrale. She was born in Tokyo on 5 March 1996, failed audition after audition, and finally got in through Hibiki's new-talent audition in 2017. Voice acting is one of the few performing jobs where the audience does not actually need the person, only the sound, so if you want to know Tono, the credit list is the biography. Put on the Yanami episodes and listen to how much emotional information one actress can carry with her mouth full of food.
