Hirohide Yakumaru

Hirohide Yakumaru, born in 1966 in Musashino, Tokyo, has spent his career as an actor and a tarento — the Japanese category of broadcast personality that has no clean English equivalent. Much of that career has been in morning television, and I think morning television is the most underrated craft in the business. The job is to be the same person at the same hour on the day a disaster leads the news and on the day nothing happens at all. Too light and you seem callous; too grave and nobody can stand you over breakfast. Finding and holding that register for decades is a real skill that looks, from the couch, like no skill whatsoever. That is precisely the measure of it working. He started out as Yakkun of the idol group Shibugaki-tai and hosted the morning show Hanamaru Market for years. But longevity in that slot is its own evidence.
