My Take

Hong Sang-soo is, for my money, one of the most quietly radical filmmakers working today. He makes the same film over and over, more or less, and somehow it never gets old, because what he's really filming is human awkwardness, longing, and the small lies we tell over drinks. The slow cinema label undersells how funny and tender his work can be. I admire his refusal to chase spectacle; he just keeps making intimate, low-budget films and the festivals keep honoring them. That consistency, sustained since his 1996 debut prize, is its own kind of artistic courage, and I deeply respect it.
