My Take
Ian McEwan is, for my money, one of the finest prose stylists writing in English. What fascinates me is the contrast between his elegant, controlled sentences and the cold dread coiled inside his plots; he began with unsettling Gothic short fiction and never lost that willingness to stare at human darkness. The Booker for Amsterdam and the global emotional gut-punch of Atonement prove he can do both critical heft and popular reach. Plenty of literary novelists are clever; far fewer make cleverness ache. McEwan does, and that combination keeps me returning to his books.
