My Take

What strikes me about Ian Watson is the sheer staying power. Winning the John W. Campbell Memorial Award in 1974 is impressive enough, but picking up a BSFA Award again in 2009 tells you this was no flash in the pan. An Oxford-trained mind who spent decades reshaping reality through speculative fiction, he later settled in Gijon, Spain, which I find rather charming. I have a soft spot for writers who treat ideas as their raw material, and Watson clearly did. His work feels like the product of restless curiosity, and I respect that he kept asking questions right to the end.
