My Take
Leslie Phillips is pure British comic history to me. With his silky upper-class delivery and those immortal catchphrases, the drawn-out "Hello" and "Ding dong," he became a fixture of the Carry On and Doctor films and the radio classic The Navy Lark. What I love is that he turned a single tone of voice into a brand; few actors are that instantly recognizable. The CBE in 2008 and OBE before it confirm how cherished he was. He worked nearly to the end of his long life, passing in 2022 at 98, and that longevity tells me the affection for him never faded.
