My Take

Irène Jacob is, to me, one of cinema's great quiet powers. Her collaboration with Krzysztof Kieślowski produced some of the most luminous performances I know, especially The Double Life of Veronique, which earned her the 1991 Cannes Best Actress prize, and Three Colours: Red. What moves me is how much she conveys through stillness and gaze rather than dialogue. She never relies on flash, yet she anchors every frame she occupies. France honoring her with the Order of Merit and Arts and Letters feels entirely right. I count her among the actresses I most deeply admire.
