Rinko Kikuchi

Okay, Rinko Kikuchi is one of those actors I'm low-key proud of, the kind who slips out of Hadano in Kanagawa and somehow ends up standing dead center at the world's biggest film festivals. Her Oscar nod for Babel floored me, the first Japanese actress nominated in something like half a century, and what gets me is how she did it almost without dialogue, just eyes and body language hurling raw emotion straight at you. Then she'll casually go toe to toe in a Hollywood monster movie and turn around and command a stage. That range is wild. She looks delicate but plays with this fearless, craftsman's grit, and that gap gets me every single time. I want her to keep raising hell on the global stage, honestly.
