My Take

Israel Houghton interests me as a craftsman who refuses to let worship music sit still. Coming out of Oceanside, California, and building Israel & New Breed, he folds funk, jazz, and gospel warmth into songs that are sincerely devotional yet impossible to sit through quietly. I think the genius is tonal: he treats praise as something the body does, not just the spirit. Plenty of contemporary Christian music leans earnest and stiff, but his catalog grooves. To me he's a rare composer who can put prayer and a dance floor on the same plate without cheapening either one.
