My Take

Ivor Bolton appeals to me because he is a double threat in the best old-fashioned sense: a conductor who also plays the harpsichord. That matters. A musician who shapes Baroque phrasing with his own hands tends to lead from inside the music rather than waving at it, and you can usually hear that intimacy in the result. A Cambridge man honored as a Commander of the British Empire, he strikes me as the craftsman type, prizing precision over flash.
