Jackie Cruz

I find Jackie Cruz a compelling example of resilience. A Queens-born Dominican-American raised between Los Angeles and Santiago, she broke through as Flaca in Orange Is the New Black after years of working as a singer and model. What draws me to her is the multidimensional ambition behind the acting; she clearly refuses to be boxed into a single lane. Surviving homelessness at sixteen and a near-fatal car accident at seventeen, and carrying her heritage with pride, she brings a lived-in authenticity to her characters that feels earned rather than performed. I read her as someone who turned struggle into texture, and I happily root for performers who climb that way.
