My Take

Jan Ullrich remains, for me, one of cycling's most poignant figures. Born in Rostock in 1973 and raised in East Germany, he was a genuine phenomenon, a Tour de France champion, Olympic gold and silver medalist in Sydney, and winner of the Vuelta a España, twice named Germany's Sportsperson of the Year. His duels in the mountains defined an era. The later doping controversy understandably complicates his legacy, and I do not wave it away. Yet the sheer beauty of that big frame climbing a brutal gradient stays with me. He is a deeply human champion, triumphs and failings included.
