My Take

Jared Fogle's story is one I can only write about as a cautionary tale. For fifteen years, Subway built an entire marketing mythology around one ordinary man's weight loss, and the public bought it completely. Then the 2015 conviction for child sex crimes shattered that image, and rightly ended his public life. What stays with me is not the man but the mechanism: how eagerly brands manufacture saints out of strangers, and how little anyone verifies the person behind the legend. His name now serves as a permanent reminder that a feel-good narrative is not the same thing as character.

Jared Scott Fogle (; born August 23, 1977) is an American former spokesman who appeared in advertising campaigns for Subway from 2000 to 2015, until an FBI investigation led to him being convicted of child sex tourism and possessing child pornography. While a student at Indiana University, Fogle lost 245 lb (111 kg) between 1998 and 1999.
