My Take
Denzel Washington is, plainly, one of the greatest screen actors alive. Two Academy Awards, a Tony, a Silver Bear, command of stage and film and the director's chair too. But the statuettes are not what move me. What I love is his gift for quiet menace and contained fury, the way he can own a scene without raising his voice. A kid from Mount Vernon who fought his way through Fordham, he brings a hard-earned humanity to every part, villains included, that lends weight to whatever he touches. He elevates a film simply by appearing in it, and to me he remains the gold standard.
