My Take

Jeff Walker is the real underground article, and I mean that as high praise. As the bassist, lead vocalist and chief lyricist of Carcass, he is the voice behind some of extreme metal's most clinically inventive writing. What fascinates me is the intelligence lurking beneath the brutality. His lyrics reward close reading, which is not what most people expect from the genre. The earlier stint in Electro Hippies and the stray stunt-performer credit add a pleasingly unpredictable texture to his story. I am drawn to artists who built their reputation from the ground up, on their own terms, and Walker is exactly that.
