My Take

Jukka Koskinen is catnip for metal fans, and rightly so. A bassist out of Riihimäki, Finland, his resume reads like a who's who of the scene: Wintersun, Nightwish, Norther, Amberian Dawn and more. Being that in-demand says everything. Bass is thankless work; nobody hums the bassline, but pull it out and the whole song collapses. I have a deep soft spot for these load-bearing craftsmen who hold the low end together while the spotlight falls elsewhere. There's something fitting about that heavy, brooding sound emerging from a country of long, dark winters. He's the engine room, and engine rooms deserve more credit.
