My Take

Jennifer Connelly is my favorite example of an actor who refused the easy path. She could have coasted forever on the otherworldly beauty that made Labyrinth iconic, but instead she chased brutal, unglamorous material — Requiem for a Dream, House of Sand and Fog — roles that ask an actress to be devastated rather than admired. The Oscar for A Beautiful Mind felt to me like the industry finally catching up to a choice she had made years earlier.
