My Take

Jerry Heller is one of music history's most morally tangled figures, and that's precisely why he fascinates me. The man went from a comfortable Shaker Heights upbringing to representing Marvin Gaye, Journey and Creedence, then defined an era as the manager behind N.W.A and Eazy-E. Straight Outta Compton cast him as a villain, but I think reducing him to that is lazy. Nobody assembles that roster without a genuine ear and ferocious hustle. He died in 2016, yet the West Coast sound he helped unleash still echoes everywhere. I'd rather remember the full, complicated man than the caricature.
