Maki Horikita

I have such a soft spot for Maki Horikita. She came up the classic way, a model and child performer who somehow grew into one of those actresses everybody in Japan just knew, and that clean, quietly steady screen presence always felt completely effortless to me, never a whiff of fakeness. She picked up an Elan d'Or newcomer award back in 2006 and you could feel she was only getting started. So when she walked away near the top of her game to step into private life, I genuinely wanted to yell at the screen, "wait, you can't just leave!" But honestly, choosing your own happiness over the spotlight takes more nerve than any role. That exit only makes me respect her more. A lovely actress, full stop.
