Jerry Seinfeld

Jerry Seinfeld is one of those rare comedians who basically rewrote the rulebook on what a sitcom could be — a show about nothing that somehow said everything. I grew up watching Seinfeld reruns and still find myself quoting it at deeply inappropriate moments, which I think is a testament to how sharp the writing was. His observational style — that deadpan "what is the deal with..." delivery — sounds almost too simple until you realize how hard it is to make the mundane feel genuinely hilarious. Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee scratched a different itch, this laid-back hang that showed he's equally great when he's not working a crowd. He's a craftsman who takes comedy as seriously as any novelist takes prose, and that relentless dedication to the bit is something I genuinely respect.
