Jimmy Barnes

Jimmy Barnes fascinates me as a Glasgow-born kid who became one of Australia's defining rock voices, both fronting Cold Chisel and racking up an astonishing fifteen solo number-one albums. That voice, raw and ragged and overpowering, sounds forged in working-class struggle rather than studio polish. I value artists whose sound carries the grain of a hard life, and Barnes delivers that in spades. His 2017 Order of Australia honour reads less like an industry pat on the back and more like recognition of a man who simply outlasted and out-sang everyone. He is, to me, authenticity turned all the way up.
