My Take
John Arne Riise is one of those players where you instantly know him by a single body part — that left foot was basically a guided missile. Growing up in Molde, a small port town on the Norwegian coast, he somehow turned into one of the most feared left-backs in Premier League history at Liverpool, where he spent seven seasons terrorizing defenders and goalkeepers alike with thunderbolt free kicks. The fact that he ended up as Norway's most-capped player ever, with 110 appearances, tells you everything about his consistency and durability. Winning the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool in 2005 is the kind of thing most footballers only dream about. Yes, there was that infamous own goal against Chelsea in the 2008 Champions League semi-final that still haunts highlight reels, but I respect any player who plays with that much force — sometimes the cannon backfires. Solid career, genuinely iconic left foot.
