My Take

John Bercow became, improbably, the most globally recognizable parliamentary figure of the Brexit years, all because of how he ran the room. Born 1963 in Edgware, he served as Speaker of the House of Commons from 2009 to 2019, his bellowed Order! Order! turning a procedural role into appointment viewing. A Conservative MP for Buckingham before taking the chair, he was a divisive figure, accused of bias and bullying, and I do not pretend that is irrelevant. But as pure theater, the small man with the enormous voice taming a chamber of squabbling MPs was undeniably gripping. Love or loathe him, he made the Commons watchable.

John Simon Bercow (; born 19 January 1963) is a British former politician who served as Speaker of the House of Commons from 2009 to 2019, and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Buckingham between 1997 and 2019. A member of the Conservative Party prior to becoming speaker, he was the first MP since Selwyn Lloyd in 1971 to be elected speaker without having been a deputy speaker.
