My Take

There is something irresistible about a man who carried the title Earl of Sandwich, a name forever tied to the food we eat without thinking. John Montagu, the eleventh holder, was not a relic, though. He sat as a crossbench peer in the House of Lords from 1995 to 2024, choosing independence over party loyalty, which I find quietly admirable in an age of rigid whipping. He was also a businessman, so he was no idle aristocrat. He died in early 2025, closing a chapter that bridged old hereditary tradition and modern public service. I like that he kept showing up for nearly thirty years.
