My Take

John Powell is one of those composers whose music I've loved for years without always knowing his name was attached. The Bourne films owe a huge chunk of their nervous, propulsive energy to his scores, and then he turns around and writes something as soaring and tender as How to Train Your Dragon, which earned him an Oscar nomination. That range floors me. English-born but Los Angeles-based since the late 1990s, he's quietly racked up music for over 70 films. I admire composers who can do both jittery action and genuine emotional lift, and Powell sits firmly in that camp for me.
