John Rooney

Being Wayne Rooney's younger brother is a heavy shadow, and I respect that John Rooney never let it sour him. He carved out a real career as an attacking midfielder, starting in Liverpool's orbit and working his way through the leagues, and has since reinvented himself as a manager, now in charge at Macclesfield. He may not have reached the heights as a player, but finding a second act in coaching is its own kind of success. His onetime wish to represent the Republic of Ireland hints at a man searching for his own identity. I am happy to follow his path on the touchline.
