My Take
John Singleton is one of those filmmakers I hold in genuine reverence. Directing Boyz n the Hood at 24 and becoming the first African American and youngest ever Best Director nominee was not luck, it was clarity of vision. He took the streets of South Central Los Angeles he knew and refused to sand them down for comfort. What moves me is his insistence on dignity for voices Hollywood routinely ignored. Losing him in 2019 at 51 still feels like an unfinished sentence. The Walk of Fame star is the least of what he earned.
