My Take
John Stockwell is a genuine polymath, and that is what draws me to him. A Harvard-educated man who modeled and acted before settling into directing and screenwriting, he had every reason to ride his looks yet chose instead to dig into the craft of building stories. His Emmy nomination for writing the TV movie Cheaters proves the move was no vanity project. As a director he brings a distinctive sun-and-water sensuality to films about youth, like Blue Crush. Born in 1961, he carries the structural intelligence you often sense in the genuinely clever. I have a soft spot for versatile, behind-the-scenes authors like him.
