My Take
Jonathan Demme is, to me, the warmest filmmaker ever to direct something genuinely terrifying. The Silence of the Lambs won him the Academy Award, but what stays with me is his habit of pointing the camera straight into a character's eyes with real tenderness. Across more than thirty years and seventy films, documentaries and dramas alike, he kept treating people as worth looking at closely. That a master of dread was also one of cinema's most humane observers is a beautiful contradiction. He died in 2017, but that trusting gaze toward humanity is still imprinted on every frame.
